The HU are a Mongolian rock and metal band known for combining heavy music with traditional Mongolian instruments, throat singing, and cultural influences. Formed in Ulaanbaatar in 2016, the band calls its distinctive style “Hunnu Rock.”
Traditional instruments are central to The HU’s sound. The morin khuur, or horsehead fiddle, appears alongside instruments such as the tovshuur, jaw harp, tsuur flute, percussion, electric guitar, bass, and drums. Mongolian throat singing adds another unmistakable element, creating deep vocal textures that work remarkably well alongside the weight and rhythm of metal.
The band began attracting international attention with “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem.” Their 2019 debut album, The Gereg, introduced Hunnu Rock to a much wider audience and helped establish The HU well beyond Mongolia. “Wolf Totem” also made them the first Mongolian musical act to top a Billboard chart.
Their second studio album, Rumble of Thunder, arrived in 2022 and continued their combination of traditional Mongolian music and modern heavy rock. The band’s growing international audience has since taken them to major festivals and tours around the world, including Glastonbury and shows with bands such as Iron Maiden.
The HU’s music is closely connected to Mongolian history, language, philosophy, and cultural traditions. Their lyrics are deliberately performed in Mongolian, allowing the band to share their language and heritage with listeners around the world rather than adapting it for an international audience.
That connection between old and new gives The HU a sound that is immediately recognizable. Traditional instruments and vocal techniques remain at the centre of the music, while heavy riffs and modern production give them the scale and power of a contemporary metal band.
