Roderick Usher has built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an enormously powerful company, creating wealth and influence that have protected the Usher family for decades. Then his children begin dying.
One by one, Roderick’s heirs meet increasingly strange and gruesome deaths. Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Auguste Dupin has spent years trying to hold the Ushers responsible for their actions, but even he cannot explain what is happening to the family.
As the deaths accumulate, Roderick invites Dupin to his childhood home and offers to tell him the truth.
The story moves between the present and the past, tracing the rise of Roderick and his sister Madeline from poverty to control of the Fortunato empire. Their history gradually reveals the choices, relationships, and secrets that helped create their fortune, along with a mysterious woman named Verna who appears repeatedly as the Usher family begins to fall apart.
Bruce Greenwood stars as Roderick Usher alongside Mary McDonnell as Madeline, Carl Lumbly as C. Auguste Dupin, Carla Gugino as Verna, and Mark Hamill as family attorney Arthur Pym. The ensemble also includes several actors familiar from creator Mike Flanagan’s previous horror projects.
Created by Flanagan, The Fall of the House of Usher draws from numerous works by Edgar Allan Poe rather than directly adapting a single story. Characters, episode titles, deaths, imagery, and plot elements reference works including The Masque of the Red Death, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Gold-Bug, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Raven.
The result combines family drama, supernatural horror, corporate corruption, and elaborate deaths within a story about wealth, consequence, and a dynasty approaching its end.
