Hugh and Olivia Crain move into Hill House with their five children, intending to renovate the sprawling old mansion, sell it, and move on. Instead, the family begins experiencing strange events inside the house, some obvious and others much harder to explain.
Eventually, something happens that forces the Crains to flee.
Decades later, the five children have built very different adult lives, but none of them has completely escaped what happened at Hill House. Steven has become a successful author writing about supernatural experiences despite his own skepticism. Shirley runs a funeral home. Theo has become a psychologist. Twins Luke and Nell have struggled in different ways with the trauma that followed them out of the house.
When another tragedy brings the family back together, memories of Hill House begin resurfacing. The story moves between their childhood and adulthood, gradually revealing what each member of the family experienced and how differently they remember the same events.
Created by Mike Flanagan and loosely inspired by Shirley Jackson’s novel, The Haunting of Hill House uses its haunted-house story to explore grief, trauma, family relationships, addiction, death, and the ways childhood experiences can continue shaping people decades later.
The house itself remains at the centre of the mystery. Its history, architecture, hidden spaces, and ghostly inhabitants become increasingly important as the Crains confront what happened there and what may have followed them when they left.
