  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (approx 150 calories)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (negligible calories)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (approx 150 calories)
  • Black food coloring (gel or paste) (negligible calories)
  • Black frosting (store-bought or homemade) (approx 800 calories for moderate amount)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with black cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Add black food coloring to the batter until you achieve the desired shade of black. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed.
  7. Spoon the batter into the cupcake liners, filling each about two thirds full.
  8. Bake for approximately 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack.
  10. Once cooled, frost the cupcakes with black frosting using a piping bag or a spatula.
  11. For an extra touch, you can decorate the cupcakes with black sprinkles, silver edible pearls, or any other gothic-inspired decorations you prefer.
