Black Velvet Cupcakes
Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (approx 150 calories)
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder (negligible calories)
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda (negligible calories)
- ¼ teaspoon salt (negligible calories)
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (approx 150 calories)
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (approx 1160 calories)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (approx 810 calories)
- 2 large eggs (approx 140 calories)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (negligible calories)
- 1 cup buttermilk (approx 150 calories)
- Black food coloring (gel or paste) (negligible calories)
- Black frosting (store-bought or homemade) (approx 800 calories for moderate amount)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with black cupcake liners.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Add black food coloring to the batter until you achieve the desired shade of black. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed.
- Spoon the batter into the cupcake liners, filling each about two thirds full.
- Bake for approximately 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
- Allow the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cooled, frost the cupcakes with black frosting using a piping bag or a spatula.
- For an extra touch, you can decorate the cupcakes with black sprinkles, silver edible pearls, or any other gothic-inspired decorations you prefer.
