Army of Darkness

1992

After being pulled through a portal at the end of Evil Dead II, Ash Williams finds himself stranded in medieval England. Armed with a shotgun, a chainsaw, and considerably more confidence than good judgment, Ash wants one thing: to get back home.

His path home involves the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, the same ancient book responsible for much of his trouble in the first place. Ash is sent to retrieve it, but a mistake during the ritual unleashes an army of the dead led by an evil version of Ash himself.

Bruce Campbell returns as Ash, now fully transformed into the swaggering, sarcastic hero that became one of horror’s most recognizable characters. Rather than simply surviving the supernatural forces around him, Ash takes command, introduces medieval soldiers to a few modern inventions, and prepares them for battle against the Deadites.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Army of Darkness takes the Evil Dead series away from the isolated cabin and into medieval fantasy. Horror remains part of the mix, but the film leans heavily into comedy, adventure, slapstick, sword fights, skeleton armies, and deliberately over-the-top action.

The result is one of the strangest entries in the franchise. What began with five people trapped in a cabin has become a medieval battle involving an ancient cursed book, an undead army, miniature versions of Ash, a chainsaw hand, and a man from the 20th century explaining gunpowder to people with swords.

Why Army of Darkness Is on Love of Gothic

Army of Darkness combines the occult mythology of Evil Dead with dark fantasy and medieval horror. The Necronomicon, Deadites, graveyards, resurrection, demonic forces, skeleton armies, and an evil double of Ash all play central roles in the story.

Its medieval setting adds castles, crypts, ancient rituals, armies of the dead, and supernatural folklore to the franchise’s established horror imagery. The film approaches most of these elements through comedy and fantasy, but they remain firmly rooted in the darker traditions that have followed Evil Dead from the beginning.

Its mixture of horror, dark fantasy, practical effects, cult comedy, and one of the genre’s most recognizable characters makes Army of Darkness a natural part of the Love of Gothic collection.
