Millie Kessler is a 17-year-old high school student trying to survive the usual collection of teenage problems when she becomes the latest target of the Blissfield Butcher, a notorious local serial killer.
During his attack, the Butcher stabs Millie with an ancient ceremonial dagger. She survives, but the weapon triggers a supernatural curse that causes the two of them to switch bodies.
Millie wakes up trapped inside the body of a middle-aged serial killer who is now wanted by police. Meanwhile, the Butcher has Millie’s body, access to her high school, and an appearance that makes it considerably easier to get close to potential victims.
There is another problem. Millie has less than 24 hours to reverse the curse before the body swap becomes permanent.
Kathryn Newton stars as Millie, with Vince Vaughn as the Blissfield Butcher. Celeste O’Connor and Misha Osherovich play Millie’s friends Nyla and Joshua, who become her unlikely support team once they are convinced that the large wanted murderer standing in front of them is actually their friend.
Directed by Christopher Landon, Freaky combines the body-swap comedy with a slasher film. The familiar setup of two people suddenly inhabiting each other’s bodies becomes considerably messier when one of those people happens to be a serial killer.
The film uses the premise for both horror and comedy, mixing supernatural curses and slasher conventions with high school drama, friendship, identity, and an assortment of increasingly bloody murders.
