Al Simmons is an elite government assassin whose career ends when he is betrayed and murdered by his superior, Jason Wynn. After his death, Simmons finds himself in Hell, where the demon Malebolgia offers him a deal.
Simmons can return to Earth and see his wife Wanda again, but in exchange he must eventually lead Hell’s army.
He accepts.
Five years after his death, Simmons returns as Spawn, a disfigured supernatural warrior with little understanding of the powers he has been given. He soon discovers that Wanda has moved on, married his former friend Terry Fitzgerald, and started a family.
Meanwhile, Malebolgia’s servant Violator, who frequently appears as the grotesque clown known as Clown, pushes Spawn toward the role Hell has planned for him. Wynn is also involved in a scheme that could cause mass death, leaving Spawn caught between revenge, his remaining connection to humanity, and the forces attempting to control him.
Michael Jai White stars as Al Simmons and Spawn, with John Leguizamo as Clown and Violator, Martin Sheen as Jason Wynn, Theresa Randle as Wanda, D. B. Sweeney as Terry, and Nicol Williamson as Cogliostro.
Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé and based on Todd McFarlane’s comic-book character, Spawn combines superhero action with supernatural horror and dark fantasy. Its story moves between Earth and Hell while demons, assassins, occult powers, and questions of damnation shape Spawn’s transformation into an antihero.
