Carrie White has spent most of her life as an outsider. At school, she is relentlessly bullied by her classmates. At home, she lives under the control of Margaret, her domineering and deeply religious mother, who views much of the world around them as sinful.
But Carrie has an ability that neither her classmates nor her mother fully understand. She can move objects with her mind, and as she grows older, her telekinetic powers are becoming stronger.
When an unexpected act of kindness gives Carrie the chance to attend her senior prom, she begins to imagine that she might finally experience something close to a normal teenage life. But another act of cruelty turns the evening into a devastating confrontation.
Carrie combines supernatural horror with a story of bullying, isolation, religious repression, and a teenager discovering a frightening power she has spent much of her life being taught to fear.
