Jeff VanderMeer is an American author known for strange, unsettling speculative fiction that blends science fiction, horror, fantasy, and environmental themes. His work often explores places where nature has become unfamiliar, human understanding begins to fail, and the line between transformation and destruction becomes difficult to define.
He is best known for the Southern Reach series, beginning with Annihilation, which follows an expedition into the mysterious Area X. The novel won both the Nebula Award and Shirley Jackson Award and was adapted into the 2018 film directed by Alex Garland. The series continued with Authority and Acceptance, followed a decade later by Absolution in 2024. A fifth Southern Reach novel, Abdication, is also planned.
