Marilyn Manson is an American rock and metal project known for industrial-heavy music, theatrical performances, provocative imagery, and a career built around challenging social and cultural conventions.
Formed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1989 as Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, the group developed a following through elaborate live shows and self-released recordings before signing with Nothing Records, the label founded by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor. Their debut album, Portrait of an American Family, arrived in 1994.
The following year’s Smells Like Children brought wider attention, particularly through the band’s dark reworking of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” But 1996’s Antichrist Superstar marked their major breakthrough. Songs such as “The Beautiful People” helped establish Marilyn Manson as one of the most recognizable and controversial acts to emerge from the alternative music scene of the 1990s.
The band’s sound has shifted considerably throughout its career. Industrial metal and alternative metal have remained important foundations, but albums have incorporated glam rock, hard rock, electronic music, blues rock, and other influences. Mechanical Animals leaned heavily into glam, while later releases such as The Pale Emperor explored a bluesier and more stripped-back sound.
Visual presentation has always been closely connected to the music. Costumes, makeup, music videos, stage design, religious imagery, grotesque characters, and references to art and popular culture have all played a role in the project’s identity. That combination of music and performance helped make Marilyn Manson a major figure in the shock rock tradition.
